iPod photo: I'm in love

I've bitten the bullet and bought an iPod photo. I already had an iPod shuffle and a first gen, brick-like 5GB iPod, but that really wasn't working out for me – I have 11GB of audio sitting on my iMac – and I fancied being able to back up my home directory and have my photos with me at all times.

So far, I'm impressed. The photo integration seems to work fine and it's nice to have album covers with all my tracks. It's also great not to have to constantly decide which tracks to have with me. Since my iMac is too old to have USB 2.0, I'm glad I invested in a PocketDock to make the iPod work over FireWire (although not so glad I bought a dedicated iPod FireWire cable as well), although I feel short-changed that I didn't get one free with the iPod. I'd also have liked one of those docks, but alas, it was not to be. Nevertheless, it's light years ahead of my old iPod, so I'm very glad I made the leap.

One thing I had been looking forward to was using my iPod to record phone conversations using a Griffin iTalk. I already had an Olympus DS-30 digital voice recorder, but the greater storage space of the iPod, the built-in rechargable battery and the fact my wife wants to nick my voice recorder for her work persuaded me the iTalk might be a good investment.

Unfortunately, unless my interviewees all intend to shout in future, I might have problems using the iTalk for recording anything more than the occasional yodeller, since the iTalk has the mic volume set to -11, but I live in hope that a little experimentation will fix this issue.
