FireWire in Tiger

I'm getting the distinct impression that either my iMac is starting to die or the FireWire drivers in Tiger are screwed. Since updating to Tiger, any large data transfer tends to freeze everything if it maxes out the FireWire bus. I moved my home directory to an external drive and performance dropped notably with Tiger; since moving back to the internal disk, Tiger's nice and fast again and I've been able to re-enable Spotlight - next stop Widgets.

Anyway, I'm not alone judging from comments at Macintouch.
