After a long time of ferreting around, I've finally got OS X Server's Open Directory system to work. For the longest time now, it hasn't, and I assumed that was because the LDAP database was corrupt (which it was). Finally, last night I worked out what the problem.
Turns out the Kerberos server wasn't running. And the reason it wasn't running was that something I'd unthinkingly left in from the time I was running OS X Server 10.2 was still there: an /etc/hostconfig specification for the hostname. Kerberos couldn't resolve the hostname properly so wouldn't start. I've removed the offending line now and everything works just fine.
With the mail, anti-spam and anti-virus servers working just fine now, the DNS server files looking good and Open Directory up and running, that just leaves the sad, sorry Print Server to get up and running. It's always had problems since 10.2 with USB printers, but I'm determined to get it up and running, purely for the sake of the Windows clients.
