OS X Server 10.4 and Fink

If anyone's been using OS X Server 10.3 and has used Fink on it, be prepared for some lengthy fiddling if you install 10.4 over it. Tiger Server's update installer expects clamav, jabber and other users to have specific user ids. If you've already created these users, it won't change the ids, but will install the iChat, anti-virus and anti-spam servers with incorrect permissions.

To fix the problem, you'll need to go in to the upgrade script on the installer DVD to find out the correct permissions and all the properties OS X Server expects the users to have. Don't forget to update the permissions on the freshclam and amavis log file; otherwise, the mail system won't work if you activate the anti-virus or anti-spam filters.

Last word of warning: the updater script forgets to create a certusers group. If you try to set up SSL authentication for incoming and outgoing mail, it won't work. Instructions on this page will tell you how to fix that particular problem.
