Google's Jagger update: what did it do?

The fallout from Google's Jagger update continues, with every SEO specialist complaining that their clients' search ranks have dropped for no good reason. The main questions have been “Why has Google done this?” and “What exactly has Google done?” Fortunately, there's a handy article at the Web Pro News site that answers both questions.
